Romeo and Juliet
By: Sara Lewis
On Thursday, April 21, Hannan High School students went to see one of the most popular works of William Shakespeare, the incredible “Romeo and Juliet”. Romeo and Juliet is a story composed of two lovers who fight against their own rival families to stay together. Sixty Hannan students assembled in the Marshall University Theater to witness a live performance from Marshall University's Department of Theater. After the play, students made their way to the Student Center to eat lunch. After eating lunch they met up with Angie Holley, director of HATS, for a quick tour of the Marshall University campus. The tour groups explored Marshall University’s sports facilities, and they also got to learn a lot about some of Marshall’s most popular buildings.
Review of the Career Center
By: Mason Whitt
The Career Center, as most people know, is a separate school offered to juniors and seniors that gives firsthand experience in jobs after high school. Some classes will even help you graduate with a program certification. There are multiple classes offered including welding, carpentry, agriculture, nursing, graphic design, auto mechanics, machine shop, work-base, and culinary arts.
In the welding program, students learn about the different kinds of welds such as TIG, MIG, and stick. This program provides a lot of hands-on experience. This is a 4 semester (two year) program that will end with a certificate in welding; however, further education in welding will be required if this is your career choice. Mr. Hughes runs this class.
Nursing is an extensive program that allows you to go into the Point Pleasant nursing home and learn hands-on care of patients. During your junior year, most of what you will focus on are vitals and learning the regulation of caretaking. When you leave this program, you will become a CNA. Ms. Foreman teaches this class.
The culinary arts program allows for hands-on experience in a catering workplace. While working in this program, you get the opportunity to learn not only how an industrial kitchen works but also how the equipment from a professional standpoint may work. The most effective skills that you learn are teamwork and consumer communication. This program truly sets you up for the real world and allows you to leave certified with a one year certificate of the culinary arts. That is the equivalent of the certification given by Mountwest.

On December 16, Hannan hosted their annual holiday fine arts performance. The program began with a three piece selection played by the hand bell choir. Next, the choir performed a four piece selection which included “The Most Wonderful Time of Year”, “Sleigh Ride”, “Christmas Medley”, and “Mary, Did you Know?” The choir performance was followed by piano solos. Chaz Fielder performed “Ding Dong, Merrily on High”, then James Bledsoe played “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing Carol of the Bell.” The hand bell choir, choir, and piano classes are instructed by Mr. Barnhouse, who also directed the performances. Next, the guitar ensemble played a two piece selection featuring a vocal solo from Matthew Qualls. The Hannan Symphonic Band played “Winter Wonderland.” The Hannan Drum line performed two pieces titled "Wildcat Groove" and "Jingle Drums." First-year teacher, Mr. Huffman, instructed and directed the guitar ensemble, symphonic band, and drum line. To end the performance, the Dance Team, directed by Mrs. Solomon, performed a Christmas Medley. Many community members attended to show support for our fine arts programs.

It’s the nation’s economic peak, the time when more people buy than any other time of the year. Christmas is coming soon, and millions of people are running out to get part-time jobs trying to get more money for Christmas. 25% of Americans pick up jobs during this time. Wrappers, toy stockers, and bankers come in great arrays. Stores will hire more people to stock the shelves with toys, wrap gifts, and watch to make sure people don’t steal items on black Friday. The AEP call centers have more people crowd the room to accept calls because of snow storms. 33% of AEP employees will pick up holiday overtime hours. ASPLUNDH hires more people to cut trees and remove them from the roads when storms knock them down. 19% of ASPLUNDH workers will be called in to work overtime hours during Christmas. In the 1920’s, the economy was at a high similarly to the US on Christmas. The more consumers buy, the more retailers sell, and the higher the demand – this helps the economy drastically. Christmas is easily the best time of the year for this nation on an economic scale.

Mountwest Trip Review
By: Mason Whitt
Mountwest is a community college that offers a small tuition and great opportunities for low income students. On October 1st, Mason County and Putnam County visited the Mountwest campus to gain an initial feeling of what it was like. There were many different tours offered (such as engineering, nursing, technology, criminal justice, and culinary). Only six students in Mason County attended the Culinary Arts tour. In this tour they showed students around the classroom learning area, the walk-in freezers, and their mirror kitchens. The culinary staff introduced students to a simple pastry recipe –which everyone had the opportunity to taste the product- as well as a savory guacamole recipe. “The kitchen was poorly organized and very dark; however, the chefs were mannerly and well-educated,” one of the teachers later commented after the tour. Many students were intrigued by the knowledge passed on from the demonstration and look forward to furthering their education in this profession.
